HENRY, Betty

July 15, 1922 – June 14, 2014

Betty Henry passed away at Michener Extendicare on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at the age of 91 years, just one month before her 92nd birthday. It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved beautiful mother. Mom had a smile that would light up a room. Betty was born on July 15, 1922 in Grafton, Yorkshire, England to parents William & Elizabeth Johnson. She grew up on a small farm in rural England. When she was 18 years old she served with the ATS during WWII and there she met her future husband Thurman, whom she married in 1945. She arrived in Canada as a war bride. And thus began her lifelong role as a devoted wife and stay at home mother, raising five children with her hubby. Betty’s greatest pastime was reading and writing letters to friends in England, with whom she stayed in touch with throughout their lives. Mom was a big cat lover she always had one for a good source of comfort and enjoyment. They were quite often found curled up on her lap. In her younger days Betty was an avid bicycle rider and also did a lot of walking. Later when Betty’s mode of transportation was her non-motorized wheelchair, she and her youngest daughter Wendy logged many miles throughout the trail system. Due to health problems she resided at Valley Park Manor Nursing Home from 2002 until its closing in 2010, after which Betty moved to Extendicare. The family wants to thank all the caring staff that had looked after mom throughout the years. Special thanks to Irene & Devina for their extra TLC. In the later part of her life, Betty had several health issues but she was a fighter, brave and resilient and battled through it. We love you mom and you will be forever in our hearts. She was predeceased by her husband, Thurman in 2006, after 61 years of marriage. She is survived and lovingly remembered by daughters; Margaret Henry of Halifax, NS, Bert (Larry) Filipek of Fuitvale, BC, Wendy Henry (Len) of Red Deer, AB; sons Bill (Lou) of Delburne, AB and Gene (Joyce) of Red Deer, AB; four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

A Memorial Service honouring Betty will be held in the Auditorium of Michener Extendicare, 12 Michener Boulevard, Red Deer, AB on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made directly to Mom’s charity of choice, the Nature Conservancy of Canada, http://www.natureconservancy.ca.
